Gum Disease – Smoking and Your Health

Gum disease is simply an irritation of the gum that’s caused by bad oral hygiene. In this case, the gum disease will affect the protective tissue that surrounds the tooth. This causes the gums to become inflamed and begin bleeding. If this isn’t taken care of right away, it may lead to tooth loss and other serious gum problems. The sooner you know you have it, the sooner you can get treatment and start living again!


Gum infection or periodontitis is a long-term infection of gums. It is not normally associated with tooth loss, but can be. Once plaque begins to buildup on the teeth and hardens, periodontal infection develops. However, if this isn’t taken care of immediately, it can lead to more serious gum disease and tooth loss over time.

There are many risk factors for getting gingivitis. These include poor oral hygiene, being over fifty years old, having poor teeth alignment, diabetes, having a family history of gum disease, not brushing teeth regularly, and not flossing. You should also avoid chewing tobacco as well as drinking red wine or having coffee on a daily basis. If you are a smoker, quitting cigarettes can dramatically reduce your risk factors for gingivitis. The best way to quit cigarettes and coffee is by going through a dental cleanse.

If you have gingivitis, there will be swollen tissue around the area of the infection. This is because the infection is affecting the tissue that protects the tooth. The tissue is very sensitive and will hurt when you brush the teeth. If you’re not brushing correctly or you’re not flossing, the plaque will build up on the tissue and expose the underlying bone and gum. This will then lead to gingivitis.

Periodontitis is one of the primary reasons for gingivitis and tooth decay. This is also known as gingivitis, gum inflammation, or periodontitis. This is a form of inflammation of the gums due to plaque. It’s an infection caused by the bacteria called Plaque bacterium. Periodontitis can also occur if the gums become infected with tartar. Tartar is composed of bacteria and protein. In some people this material can harden and begin to irritate the mouth. Other times the tartar will actually bleed and cause the gums to bleed or become irritated.

Gum disease has been associated with both men and women and those with diabetes. For women there is a greater risk factor for developing gum disease when they are pregnant or after they give birth. For men, there is a greater risk factor if they are diabetic or are undergoing hormonal changes. There are also several risk factors for both men and women that are overweight, especially if they smoke. For those who smoke, quitting smoking will help to reduce your risk factors for both gum disease and heart disease.

Those who do not brush and floss regularly are more likely to develop periodontal disease as well. Brushing and flossing remove food particles from between teeth and under the gum line. This helps to reduce the risk of tartar and bacteria building up. Dental cleaning is another way to reduce the buildup of plaque on the teeth and in the gums.

Cigarette smoking also increases your risk of gum disease. This is because smokers are more likely to have periodontal disease in the first place. Cigarette smoking also reduces the effectiveness of other oral dental care methods such as brushing and flossing. It inhibits the passage of certain saliva promoting bacterial growth. Cigarette smoking also weakens the immune system making you more susceptible to infection.

Periodontitis causes swelling of gums and inflammation of infected gums. The bacteria that are caused by smoking, eat away at the protective bone that surrounds your teeth. This makes it easier for the bad breath bacteria to grow and harder for them to be killed. Cigarette smoking increases your risk of having a bad breath or gums that bleed easily.
